How We Score

We don't rate golf courses by their marketing photos. We rate them by the things that actually matter when you show up to play.

Our Scoring Philosophy

Every score on this site comes from the same 10-point framework — and we explain every point. We don't hide behind vague stars or unexplained ratings. If a course scores a 7.8, you'll know exactly which dimensions pulled it up and which ones held it back.

Our reviewers are local golfers. They walk the courses, test the gear, and report what they actually experienced. When we can't verify something, we say so.

We do not accept free products or paid placements. A higher score cannot be bought.

The 10 Scoring Dimensions

Every course review uses these ten dimensions. Gear reviews use a similar transparent framework adapted to the product type.

# Dimension Weight What It Measures
1 Price Honesty 15% Is the round worth what you pay? Are hidden costs avoided?
2 Walkability 15% Can an average golfer walk 18 holes comfortably?
3 Course Condition 15% Fairways, greens, and tee boxes. Was it mowed this week?
4 Staff Friendliness 10% How are golfers treated from check-in to clubhouse?
5 Pace of Play 10% Does the course keep rounds moving on a normal weekend?
6 Beginner Friendliness 10% Would we send a first-timer here without hesitation?
7 Scenery & Setting 5% Does the mountain landscape add to the experience?
8 Practice Facilities 5% Range, putting green, and warm-up areas.
9 Clubhouse & Amenities 5% Food, restrooms, and the after-round experience.
10 Overall Local Value 10% Would a Beckley local recommend it to a friend?

What Each Score Means

Score Rating What It Means
9.0–10 Exceptional Worth planning your week around. We rarely give this.
8.0–8.9 Excellent A genuinely good course or product. Highly recommended.
7.0–7.9 Solid Good value with a few noticeable compromises.
6.0–6.9 Average Acceptable, but not memorable. Know what you're getting.
Below 6.0 Skip We'd steer most golfers elsewhere.

How We Test

Environment: Courses are evaluated in real playing conditions, not from photos or promotional materials.

Duration: Gear is tested over multiple rounds when possible. First impressions are noted, but scores are based on repeated use.

Reviewer Background: Every review names its author. Their experience level and local perspective are part of the review, not hidden behind a brand.

No Free Products: We buy or borrow gear like a normal golfer would. We do not accept free merchandise in exchange for scores.

How Often Scores Are Updated

Course conditions change with weather and management. Gear availability shifts with new models. We review scores at least every six months, and more often when conditions or products change significantly.

If a score changes, we say so in the article and explain why. We don't quietly rewrite numbers.

Conflict of Interest Statement

We earn a commission when you buy through some links on this site. This never changes our scores or recommendations.

If a product isn't good enough, we say so — and we don't link to it. We have turned down commissions by being honest about what not to buy.

No manufacturer, course, or advertiser can pay for a higher score. If we receive a free product for evaluation, we disclose it in that specific review.
